Urgent: Yerevan Has a New Mayor

Hrachya Sargsyan has been elected as the new Mayor of Yerevan. "44 votes in favor, 10 against. The City Council has appointed a new mayor," wrote Yerevan City Council member Izabella Abgaryan on her Facebook page.

It is recalled that the City Council made a decision through a closed vote to dismiss the current mayor, Hayk Marutyan, and to elect the first deputy mayor, Hrachya Sargsyan, in his place. Council members were required to vote on the ballot either in favor or against Hrachya Sargsyan’s appointment as mayor. A 30-minute time was allocated for the voting.

The draft decision to express no confidence in the mayor was submitted on December 17, after which a council session was convened.
