A Distorted Formulation on the Genocide Will Be Offered in Erdoğan's Style of 'Joint Tragedy', Internationalist Says
Internationalist Suren Sargsyan wrote on his Facebook page: 'For the first time in its history, Armenia is entering the process of normalizing relations with Turkey by meeting Turkey's main preconditions:
- Artsakh has been handed over to Azerbaijan,
- The international recognition of the genocide has de facto been removed from our foreign policy agenda,
- The most recent precondition will soon be satisfied—the opening of the corridor.
Incidentally, in 1992, Turkey set a precondition for Armenia to remove the following clause from its Declaration of Independence:
'11. The Republic of Armenia supports the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Turkey and Western Armenia in 1915.'
Another precondition was the removal of the image of Mount Ararat from Armenia's coat of arms, as it was viewed as a territorial claim against Turkey. During the drafting of the new constitution (see Nikol Pashinyan's initiative), this issue might be resolved, perhaps by the establishment of the Fourth Republic, by adopting a new declaration, and so on.
Now, it is highly likely that Armenia and Turkey will sign documents to establish diplomatic relations, affirming that Armenia recognizes Turkey's territorial integrity and inviolability, and will offer a distorted formulation on the genocide in Erdoğan's style of 'joint tragedy'.
In the upcoming negotiations, Turkey will have zero constraints from the Armenian side, but will have some constraints from the intermediary countries. Currently, these are two: the USA (see Bloomberg's leak) and Russia (see the Armenian authorities' request for mediation).
