28-Year-Old Man Charged with Violence Against Police Officers

The Investigation Committee of Armenia has determined the circumstances under which a 28-year-old resident of Yerevan used violence against police officers, drove a vehicle without a driving license, intentionally damaged their vehicle, and unlawfully acquired and carried a cold weapon.

According to the factual data obtained during the investigation, the 28-year-old individual, lacking a driving license, drove a 'MERCEDES-BENZ' vehicle with altered registration plates on Tumanyan Street in Yerevan in March 2021. An administrative violation record was drawn up against him on March 10 of the same month.

Continuing to drive without a license, he operated the 'MERCEDES-BENZ' vehicle without mandatory insurance and registration plates. As a result, on May 9, 2021, at 06:00, the vehicle was stopped by traffic police, taken to a designated area under the Armenian Police Traffic Police, and on May 24, administrative violation records were filed against the young man.

Additionally, employees of the Criminal Investigative Department of the Armenian Police received operational information regarding the possession of illegal drugs and weapons by the 28-year-old. On July 29, 2021, around 23:00, when officers approached his 'MERCEDES-BENZ GLE 63 AMG S' parked in front of a gas station on Hrachya Kocharyan Street, they ordered him to exit the vehicle. However, in an effort to evade the police's legal request, the young man attempted to flee.

Due to adjacent vehicles blocking the space required for moving into the traffic lane, he abruptly reversed his vehicle, intentionally hitting the front left side of the Armenian police officer's 'BMW 528 I', thereby causing significant property damage.

The mechanical impact caused the 'BMW 528 I' to move, and the young man succeeded in driving away towards the police officers, creating a genuine threat to their health.

The investigation also revealed that the 28-year-old had unlawfully obtained a hunting knife, classified as a cold weapon, which was discovered during a personal search, secured to a leather strap hanging around his neck.

According to the accumulated evidence, charges have been filed against the 28-year-old under Article 243.1, part 1.1, Article 185, part 2, point 3, Article 316, part 1, and Article 235, part 4 of the Criminal Code of Armenia. He has been remanded in custody as a preventive measure. The pre-investigation has been completed, and the criminal case has been forwarded to the prosecutor for judicial supervision with a request to confirm the indictment and send it to court.
