Facebook Reports Armenia among Countries Engaged in Espionage Activity
Facebook has reported that approximately 50,000 users from over a hundred countries may fall prey to hacking attacks. According to the Washington Post, the company made this announcement on Thursday. In its statement, the company noted that the attacks could be carried out by monitoring firms working for state agencies, typically targeting journalists, politicians, and human rights defenders.
The notifications were sent as a result of a multi-month investigation conducted by Meta, Facebook's parent company. Facebook revealed that it is taking punitive actions against seven monitoring companies from four countries by removing around 1,500 fake accounts and blocking harmful websites.
Among the companies facing sanctions from Meta is Cytrox, which operates in North Macedonia. The report states that Meta has deleted 300 Facebook and Instagram accounts that Cytrox used to deceive targeted users in 10 countries, including Egypt, Armenia, Greece, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Colombia, Côte d'Ivoire, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Germany.
