Simon Martirosyan Becomes World Bronze Medalist
In the 109 kg weight category at the ongoing World Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, double Olympic silver medalist and double world and European champion Simon Martirosyan secured a bronze medal with a total lift of 416 kg.
In the snatch event, the two-time world champion began with a confident lift of 188 kg. He successfully completed the second attempt with a weight of 193 kg, but the judges did not count it. For the third attempt, coach Pashik Alaverdyan ordered 196 kg, but the double Olympic silver medalist was unable to fix the barbell overhead. In this event, Simon Martirosyan earned a small silver medal with his lift of 188 kg, finishing 7 kg behind Akbar Dzhuraev, the champion of the Tokyo Olympic Games, who recorded a result of 195 kg in the snatch event.
In the clean and jerk event, the leader of the Armenian team started with 228 kg and successfully completed the lift. For the second attempt, the coaching staff ordered a weight of 237 kg, which the Olympic silver medalist was unable to lift. A third attempt at the same weight also ended in failure. In the clean and jerk, Simon Martirosyan secured a small bronze medal with his lift of 228 kg.
The title of world champion in this weight category went to Akbar Dzhuraev, who achieved a total lift of 433 kg, while the silver medal was claimed by Ruslan Nurudinov, the champion from the Rio Olympics, with a total of 421 kg.
