EU Commission Proposes Changes Regarding Schengen Zone

The European Commission has initiated reforms related to the Schengen Zone, aimed at strengthening the protection of external borders while simultaneously maintaining free movement within the area, reports RIA Novosti.

Discussions on the reform began last fall, and in light of the migrant crisis at the Polish-Belarusian border and the ongoing pandemic, it remains timely.

According to a statement from the Commission, “The proposed changes are aimed at strengthening coordination within the EU and providing states with improved tools to overcome challenges at the EU's common external borders, as well as internal borders of the Schengen Zone.”

In the event of a new crisis involving illegal migrants, the Commission suggests reducing the number of existing crossing points and enhancing measures for the protection of the EU's external borders.
