Azerbaijan's Demand Regarding Minefield Maps Rejected: Taron Simonian

Yerevan State University associate professor, candidate of legal sciences, and former MP Taron Simonian writes:

“In short, regarding today’s decisions on the interim measures applied by the International Court of Justice of the United Nations in the case of ARMENIA vs. AZERBAIJAN:

The Court has satisfied almost all of Armenia’s requests and decided to obligate Azerbaijan to: ensure the protection of the rights and security of Armenian prisoners of war; prevent incitement of racial hatred and discrimination against Armenians by Azerbaijani officials and public bodies; prevent vandalism and desecration of Armenian cultural heritage; refrain from any actions that could exacerbate or prolong the issues under consideration or make their resolution more difficult.

In the case of AZERBAIJAN vs. ARMENIA, the Court satisfied only a small portion of Azerbaijan’s demands and decided to obligate Armenia to: prevent incitement of racial hatred and discrimination against Azerbaijanis by organizations and individuals; refrain from any actions that could exacerbate or prolong the issues under consideration or make their resolution more difficult.

Azerbaijan's demand regarding minefield maps has been rejected. In contrast to Armenia, the Court recognized that Azerbaijani officials and public figures are propagating hatred against Armenians, which can be attributed to the Azerbaijani state itself.

So, let’s consider this a success of our professional team and get back to organized and targeted work.

P.S. It is becoming a priority to initiate international legal proceedings against hostage-taking within the framework of the same Court’s Convention.”
