Potato Yield Decreases: Concerning Figures from 'Zhoghovourd'

'Zhoghovourd' newspaper reports: 'Last year, farmers cultivated less potato but harvested more. The newspaper has learned from the Statistical Committee of Armenia that last year there were 20,050 hectares of potato fields, whereas in 2018 (it was 20,500 in 2019 as well) the area was 22,100 hectares. Last year, farmers cultivated 1,600 hectares less potato. Notably, in Armenia, people have started to cultivate less potato since 2016, when the cultivated area was 28,900 hectares. Additionally, it was from that period that the yield of potatoes began to decrease. For instance, while last year our country produced 437,200 tons of potatoes, in 2016, 606,300 tons were harvested, and in 2017, 547,400 tons of potatoes were harvested. Although in 2020, compared to 2019, potato yield increased by 33,100 tons, it remains concerning because if this trend continues, not only this year but also in the coming years, farmers will start to engage less in potato cultivation.'
