58% of COVID-19 Patients Show Risk of Chronic Heart Disease, TASS Reports
A deformation of the heart muscle, which may lead to chronic cardiovascular diseases, is observed in about 58% of individuals infected with COVID-19 over the course of a year. This was reported by TASS, referencing the first cardiovascular studies conducted by scientists in the Tyumen region of Russia.
“When we compared the initial results of examinations of COVID-19 patients with pneumonia, three and 12 months after discharge from the hospital, we saw a deterioration. Three months later, deterioration (editor's note: heart muscle deformation) was observed in about 28% of cases, and after one year, in 58% of the participants in the study,” the report stated.
It is noted that the occurrence of heart muscle deformation is highly indicative of the potential development of chronic heart failure in the future.
