The Omicron Variant Has Arrived in Russia: Cases of Infection Confirmed
Russia has reported its first cases of patients infected with the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus. This was announced to RIA Novosti by Senator Vladimir Krugly.
According to him, the source of the variant's spread may be Russian citizens who traveled to Egypt. He has called for the suspension of air traffic with that country, as this strain of the coronavirus has yet to be fully studied.
The World Health Organization has issued a warning regarding a new subvariant of the coronavirus, named Omicron (B.1.1.529), designating it as a variant of concern.
This new strain of the virus has approximately 50 mutations, 30 of which are in the spike protein, and it was first reported in the Republic of South Africa.
WHO has also stated that this variant spreads more quickly than previous ones, as evidenced by experiences in South Africa. Consequently, the new strain may infect more people, including those who have recovered from other variants.
The organization has urged all countries to pay greater attention to the study of this new coronavirus variant.
