Mass Protests Lead to Criminal Cases Against 271 Users in Turkey

The Turkish Directorate General of Security has initiated criminal cases against individuals who made posts on social media calling for street protests following the collapse of the national currency, the lira. Turkish media report that charges have been filed against 271 users.

As previously reported, protests erupted in Istanbul, Ankara, and several other cities after the decline of the Turkish lira. Participants demanded the resignation of the government and the ousting of the ruling Justice and Development Party.

On November 23, the Turkish lira recorded another significant drop, depreciating to 13.5 against the dollar. Over the past year, the lira has lost approximately 45% of its value.
