Brother and Cousins of Meghri Mayor Assault the Head of Communal Services
On November 21, Bagrat Zakaryan, the head of the Meghri community, had his brother and cousins assault Arthur Atanesyan, the head of Meghri's communal services, who is currently hospitalized at the Meghri medical center. This information was reported by Aravot.am.
The outlet tried to confirm the news with Atanesyan, but his phone was answered by Ararat Tumanyan, the former mayor of Meghri and the head of the Civil Contract party’s Meghri regional structure.
“Arthur Atanesyan is being pressured to write a resignation letter, but he refuses. The mayor warned him, saying, ‘make sure you don’t regret it; it will be bad.’ At the time of the incident, Arthur was engaged in agricultural work on his land when the mayor's brother, Yeghishe Zakaryan, his cousin, Vardan Zakaryan, and another relative, Libik Ohanyan, attacked him. The police are aware of the situation but have not yet taken a statement from Arthur Atanesyan, as he is unable to provide one,” said Ararat Tumanyan.
According to another rumor circulating in Meghri, the head of the communal services was assaulted for daring to make a derogatory statement about Bagrat Zakaryan. “I can’t say for sure, but the real reason was the resignation letter. It’s not just Arthur Atanesyan who has been pressured to write a resignation letter; many others have been offered the same. Some have already submitted theirs,” said Ararat Tumanyan. According to our interlocutor, an atmosphere of fear has been reestablished in Meghri. “Can you imagine that Arthur Atanesyan's close friend, Gevorg Khachatryan, the former head of the Agarak administrative district, witnessed the incident but refuses to testify, claiming he was too far away?” added Ararat Tumanyan.
