Draft Resolution Submitted to US Congress to Not Recognize Putin as President of Russia After 2024

A proposal has been made to the US House of Representatives to not recognize Russian President Vladimir Putin as the leader of the Russian state if he runs for a new term in 2024. This was reported by Kommersant.

If the resolution is passed, it will have an advisory nature. The authors state that Vladimir Putin is in power due to electoral violations and that the continuation of his presidency is illegal. The amendments to the Constitution made in 2020 have also been referred to as a violation of Russian laws and international obligations.

“Any attempt by President Vladimir Putin to remain in office after the end of his presidential term on May 7, 2024, should result in the United States not recognizing him,” the draft resolution states.
