Azerbaijan's Armed Forces Must Be Immediately Withdrawn from Armenian Territory, MEPs

More than a dozen members of the European Parliament have sent a letter to Josep Borrell, Vice President of the European Commission and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, urging the use of all means to suspend and prevent violations of the territorial integrity of the Republic of Armenia, as well as Azerbaijan's war rhetoric.

The MEPs reminded in the letter that Azerbaijan's armed forces attacked along the eastern border of Armenia on November 16. ‘As members of the European Parliament, we condemn the Azerbaijani attack and incursion into the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia, which violates the statement on a ceasefire from November 9, 2020, and seriously endangers the fragile peace in the region. The armed forces of Azerbaijan must be immediately and completely withdrawn from Armenian territory,’ the letter stated.

The MEPs expressed deep sorrow for the human losses caused by the attack. They emphasized that any action or rhetoric aimed at violating the safety of the population and the rights of individuals in the eastern and southern regions of the Republic of Armenia must be immediately halted.

‘We call on the EU External Action Service to use all its leverage to suspend and prevent violations of the territorial integrity of the Republic of Armenia, as well as warlike rhetoric,’ the MEPs highlighted.

Among the 17 signatories are Lukas Furla, leader of the EU-Armenia Friendship Group in the European Parliament, Cypriot MEP Lefteris Christoforou, German MEP Lars Patrick Berg, Greek MEP Eva Kaili, among others.
