Today, the Yerevan-Goris Highway is under Azerbaijani Control: What Are the Consequences?

Since the defeat in the 2020 war, tensions at the borders of Armenia, particularly in the Gegharkunik and Syunik regions, have continued. This situation is primarily a consequence of the current Armenian government's acceptance of a defeatist policy after the loss, allowing Azerbaijanis to enter the borders of Armenia. Seyran Ohanyan, the leader of the 'Armenia' parliamentary faction, stated this during a press conference held by opposition parties in the National Assembly.

"The adversary continues to exert pressure on the defeated government, because international experiences show that, in reality, defeated governments are under the pressure and dictation of both the adversary and international platforms," he said, emphasizing that the adversary's anti-Armenian rhetoric persists and that they are trying to deepen their presence within the borders of Armenia through specific actions.

"This is particularly evident in the Syunik region, through the establishment of new checkpoints on the Kapan-Goris road and by creating a new situation, as well as through the advancement of positions in the area from Ishkhanasar to Jermuk. Essentially, today the Yerevan-Goris highway is under Azerbaijani control," he stated.

According to Ohanyan, the statements made on November 9 and January 11 regarding the blockade of roads and infrastructure serve as a basis for Turkey and Azerbaijan to advance the idea of the 'Zangezur Corridor.' He warned, "The unblocking of roads will lead to a deeper blockade of Armenia and Artsakh, economic pressure, and a change in the demographic landscape," pointing out that the Armenian government has not drawn any conclusions from these developments.

Ohanyan expressed concern that the National Assembly is not discussing important issues related to the border while provocations from the adversary continue. "If the current government believes that provocations from Azerbaijan will cease after signing a final peace agreement, then that is yet another deception for them. In this situation, the executive and legislative bodies of Armenia do not prioritize the urgent issues facing Armenia, particularly regarding security. It is a crime to discuss various issues in the National Assembly while ignoring the security problems facing Armenia," he said, noting that the political majority obstructed an extraordinary session of the National Assembly Council, during which the government was supposed to respond to questions related to security issues.
