Another Journalist Killed in Mexico
A well-known journalist, Freddy López Arevalos, was shot and killed by an unidentified assailant in the Chiapas state of Mexico. According to Heraldo de Chiapas, the incident occurred on Thursday evening as the 57-year-old Arevalos was returning home in San Cristobal de las Casas.
The assailant approached him on a motorcycle and shot him while he was taking items out of his car's trunk. The perpetrator fled the scene.
The state police have launched an investigation. Arevalos was the founder of the local news agency Maya Press and had worked for various prominent publications, including Novedades de México, Prensa Libre de Guatemala, and Notimex.
According to Alejandro Encinas, Mexico's Deputy Minister for Human Rights, 47 journalists have been killed in the country over the past three years.
