Potato Prices Align with Dollar Exchange Rate: 'Jraparak'

'Jraparak' newspaper reports: 'In our republic, the price of potatoes is gradually aligning with the dollar exchange rate. Compared to the same period last year, they are being sold at a higher price.

'Jraparak' conducted a small survey and found that today in Yerevan supermarkets, the price for one kilogram of potatoes ranges from 330 to 550 drams. In some vegetable shops, it fluctuates around 280-300 drams. During the same months last year, the price for one kilogram was around 150 drams.

According to farmers, the price of potatoes will rise even further in the winter months compared to last year. They attribute this to a shortage of irrigation water, which farmers had been voicing concerns about since the beginning of the year. Due to insufficient water supply, the potato harvest this year has been less than expected, leading to increased prices.

Because of the high prices, many farmers started harvesting their potatoes early and sold them at a high price directly from the fields. However, it should be noted that resellers benefit the most from this situation, as they buy potatoes from farmers at low prices and sell them at much higher rates. Without doing any work, they earn more income than farmers, who toil day and night in the heat and cold to cultivate the land and eventually sell their harvest for mere pennies.'
