Increase in Dangerous Syndrome Among COVID-19 Infected Children in the United States

An increase in cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) has been observed in the United States, following infections attributed to the Delta variant. The details of the disease have been reported by experts in the U.S. According to ABC News, MIS-C is a rare condition where different parts of the body become inflamed, including the eyes and gastrointestinal organs.

MIS-C typically occurs four to six weeks after a COVID-19 infection. The rise in cases in the U.S. follows an increase in Delta variant infections this summer. Doctors note that the syndrome can lead to serious conditions in children and can be potentially fatal. However, according to the CDC, the majority of children diagnosed with this condition receive medical treatment.

There have been a total of 46 deaths reported from MIS-C in the U.S., with 5,217 confirmed cases of the syndrome. Notably, approximately 61% of the reported cases have occurred among Hispanic or Black children, and children aged 6 to 11 are most frequently affected by this illness.

In the United States, the coronavirus has been confirmed in 5.9 million children, with only 0.0009% of them developing MIS-C. Nevertheless, the average daily number of MIS-C cases nearly doubled from July to August.
