Video: For the First Time, a Drone Captures Footage from Inside a Hurricane
Saildrone Inc., a company specializing in drones, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have released footage captured by a drone sent into the eye of a Category 4 hurricane. According to the ‘Moya Planeta’ platform, the drone, equipped with a specially designed 'hurricane wing,' was able to operate under extreme wind conditions and gathered data in real time.
This data will be used to improve hurricane forecasting, which is crucial for enhancing prediction accuracy and reducing human casualties, as coastal regions can better prepare for an impending storm.
‘Saildrone went where research vessels could never go—into the epicenter of the storm,’ the developers shared on their website.
The extreme footage was captured under conditions featuring 15-meter waves and wind speeds of 240 km/h.
