The Armenian cultural heritage in the territories that have come under Azerbaijani control as a result of the 44-day war is in serious danger, according to the Permanent Commission on Human Rights Protection and Public Issues of the National Assembly.
It was detailed that the fate of more than 2,000 monuments has come under threat, including 13 monastic complexes, 122 churches, 52 fortresses, and 523 khachkars.
According to the representative of Artsakh in Armenia, Sergei Ghazaryan, "There remain 127 school libraries and 12 museums with over 20,000 exhibits in the lost territories of Artsakh."
Ghazaryan noted that since the ceasefire on November 9, 2020, there have been instances of the destruction of Armenian cultural heritage and vandalism, including the deliberate targeting and vandalism of the Holy Savior Ghazanchetsots and St. John the Baptist churches in Shushi.
