Video: $1 Billion Allocated for the Construction of the Kajaran-Sisisan Road, Says Kerobyan
“You know that we also have an alternative road (editor's note - the road from Kapan to Goris), which is not good but is a functioning road, and in the worst case, we have what we call a 'Plan B.' We are currently working intensively to make that road more convenient for transit. As you also know, we are very close to making practical, significant steps regarding the Kajaran-Sisian segment of the 'North-South' project. The government, by the way, plans to invest approximately $1 billion (487 billion drams) in the construction of the Kajaran-Sisian section,” the Minister of Economy stated to reporters.
Kerobyan does not believe that Iran will stop cargo transportation through Armenia due to the issues arising from Azerbaijan along the interstate road, creating a deficit in the economy. “I know very well the composition of trade with Iran, but I do not think there is a major problem. Of course, an obstacle has arisen, and I am confident that this obstacle will be overcome very soon,” the minister noted.
The issues along the Syunik interstate road escalated at the end of August when Azerbaijani forces closed the segments of the Kapan-Goris interstate road that had come under their control after the war, specifically the areas of Karmirakhar-Shurnukh and Goris-Vorotan.
It is worth noting that on September 12, the National Security Service announced that the police of the Republic of Azerbaijan had been stopping and inspecting the documents of Iranian license-plate truck drivers and their cargo along the section of the road that had come under Azerbaijani control after the war.
In connection with the situation, the Iranian embassy in Armenia stated that the removal of obstacles on the roads is a priority for Iran. According to the statement, Iran is closely monitoring the developments in the Caucasus region that have occurred in recent months and will pursue various ways to facilitate trade with neighboring countries, including Armenia.
