Azerbaijani Police Stop Iranian Drivers, Claiming They Have Entered Azerbaijani Territory

In the area of Vorotani on the Goris-Kapan road, Azerbaijani police officers are demanding that Iranian truck drivers pay a cash fee of $130 to pass through their territory. This was reported by Gevorg Tosunyan, a correspondent for CivilNet from Syunik, who spoke with the Iranian drivers.

“The Iranian drivers informed us that Azerbaijani police stopped them and stated that they had entered Azerbaijani territory. The Azerbaijanis demanded $130 from each driver. After the drivers said they did not have the money, the Azerbaijani police took their passports and vehicle information, telling them they must pay the fee upon returning,” reported CivilNet's correspondent.

Gevorg Tosunyan noted that Azerbaijani authorities have erected a large trilingual sign near Karmrakar and Vorotani stating, “You are entering the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan.”
