Experts Arrive in Armenia: What Will the New Agreement Between Armenia and Russia Entail?
Russian military specialists are currently in Armenia. They were received the previous day by Armenia's Defense Minister Arshak Karapetyan. According to an official statement, they are in Armenia to participate in the ongoing negotiations and discussions within the framework of Armenian-Russian bilateral cooperation.
No details were provided in the official communication regarding the specific issues being discussed. Recently, it became known that Russia and Armenia are discussing a draft agreement for the creation of a unified regional air defense system.
It should be noted that Armenia and Russia already have a unified air defense system. Back in 2016, the National Assembly ratified the agreement on the establishment of a unified regional air defense system in the Caucasus region between the Republic of Armenia and the Russian Federation. The visit of Russian specialists to Armenia is directly related to this agreement.
Discussions about the effectiveness of the air defense system began in parallel with the 44-day war when there was a threat to Armenia's borders, prompting many to remind about Russia's obligations. The agreement allows for the use of the capabilities of the Russian Armed Forces' aerospace troops, potentially up to the use of nuclear weapons. The Russian aerospace forces have satellite systems, as well as monitoring systems that can be used within Armenian territory to benefit the RA Armed Forces' air defense capabilities.
