VIDEO: The US Temporarily Halts Evacuations from Kabul to Clear the Runway of People
The US military has temporarily halted evacuations from Kabul to clear the runway of people trying to climb onto planes or hang from the chassis. A source from the Pentagon informed Reuters, unable to specify how long the pause will last.
In the past 24 hours, residents of the country have been attempting to leave Afghanistan by clinging to civilian aircraft departing from Kabul International Airport or US military planes. Dozens of Afghans are surrounding the planes and running after them. At the same time, some of them are trying to hang from various parts of the aircraft.
It was previously reported that two Afghans died when they fell from the chassis of a plane taking off in Kabul. Afghans, who were reportedly working with US military personnel, tried to flee by boarding the aircraft. However, there was no space for them inside the planes. Refugees clung to the chassis but fell off when the plane gained altitude.
On Sunday, the Taliban established control over Kabul. The founder of the Taliban movement has been declared the new president of Afghanistan after the group announced that the twenty-year Western occupation had 'ended.'
