Arsen Babayan, a member of the 'Homeland' party council, wrote on his Facebook page: “Months ago, the person holding the office of Prime Minister announced the latest unprecedented event. According to him, the water level of Lake Sevan was set to record a historical peak in June-July of this year. However, as always, this latest unprecedented event turned out to be another not-so-unprecedented falsehood. Although additional water entry has been ensured since the beginning of the year through the Arpa-Sevan tunnel, the lake's level was 1900.68 meters as of August 13, which is lower than the 1900.73 meters recorded during the same period last year.

This government came to power with a promise to ban water extraction from Lake Sevan. They even passed a law that was supposed to guarantee the exclusion of water extraction. I remember, during those days, there was a deputy from Sevan who enthusiastically announced from the National Assembly podium that, finally, Lake Sevan was saved. It turned out to be yet another instance of demagoguery with a populist rhetoric.

By the way, I am not opposed to releasing additional water from Lake Sevan. But I was not opposed to it before, either, when the current government was beating their chests from the opposition benches, claiming that releasing water was not permissible. Success in politics is indeed based on populism, but does such a political approach have any value in acquiring power?”
