Two Police Checkpoints to Be Removed from Central Yerevan
The government plans to remove the stationary police checkpoints from the intersection of Baghramyan Avenue and Demirchyan Street, as well as from France Square. The draft decision has been presented for public discussion by the police on the unified platform for the publication of legal acts.
By a decision dated June 3, 2010, the government established a permanent stationary service by the Traffic Police in several areas of Yerevan. Until the formation of the police patrol service, the assurance of traffic safety in Armenia was carried out by the Traffic Police, including in Yerevan by the forces of the dissolved 1st police battalion of the Traffic Police.
The published draft states that with the activation of the patrol service, the 1st police battalion of the Traffic Police was dissolved as of July 7, 2021, and has been replaced by the patrol service of the police in Yerevan.
Currently, the function of ensuring traffic safety through the stationary checkpoint at the intersection of Baghramyan Avenue and Demirchyan Street, as well as in France Square, has become unnecessary, according to the police’s presented draft, as there is no need for traffic regulation operations, and traffic safety can be ensured by the mobile patrol units operating 24/7. Therefore, according to the police, the presence of a stationary checkpoint would be a redundancy.
It should be noted that this initiative is still in draft status. It will come into effect only after being approved by the government.
