The World is on the Brink of a Third Wave of Coronavirus, Says WHO Director
The rise in COVID-19 infections around the world is primarily attributed to the Delta variant. This was announced by Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, during the opening of the Emergency Committee meeting.
“The Delta variant is one of the main causes of the current surge in infections, exploiting increased social interaction and mobility,” he stated.
According to Ghebreyesus, rising vaccination rates in Europe and North America had begun yielding positive results, with a decrease in mortality rates. However, he indicated that the situation is changing again and the world is on the brink of a “third wave” of the pandemic.
“Last week marked the fourth consecutive week where there was an increase in COVID-19 infections globally. After ten weeks of decline, the mortality rate has begun to rise as well,” Ghebreyesus reported.
