First Sanitary Landfill in Armenia

The acting Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures of Armenia, Suren Papikyan, visited Kotayk Province today to observe the construction progress of the first sanitary landfill being built in Armenia. The information was provided by the ministry's press service.

Accompanied by Governor Aharon Sahakyan, the minister toured the construction site and discussed the implementation process with representatives from the construction contractor, "Tunnel Sadd Ariana" LLC. Papikyan urged that the work be carried out according to the schedule and in compliance with established quality standards.

The landfill is being constructed within the framework of the agreement signed between the Government of the Republic of Armenia and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for the implementation of the "Solid Waste Management Program for Kotayk and Gegharkunik Provinces" and represents the first attempt to establish a comprehensive solid waste management system in Armenia. The sanitary landfill will include infrastructure designed to prevent soil, groundwater, and air pollution, as well as administrative buildings and access roads. Additionally, waste transfer stations will be built in the Akunk community of Kotayk Province and the Martuni community of Gegharkunik Province.

The total budget for the project is €11 million, of which €5.5 million is a loan and €5.5 million is a grant. The construction is expected to be completed in 2022.
