All Armenian Representatives Start with Victories in the World Cup Tournament
Armenian representatives have commenced the World Cup tournament in chess with victories. According to Armenpress, in the opening round of the tournament held in Sochi, victories were celebrated by Haik Martirosyan, Hovhannes Gabuzyan, and Shant Sargsyan. Levon Aronian and Gabriel Sargsyan will enter the competition beginning from the second round. In the women’s competition, Elina Danielyan also achieved victory over her opponent playing with the black pieces.
This year, a record number of Armenian chess players are representing the country in the World Cup tournament. In the men’s tournament, Armenia is represented by five players: Levon Aronian, Gabriel Sargsyan, Hovhannes Gabuzyan, Haik Martirosyan, and Shant Sargsyan. It is noteworthy that this number is a record for Armenia; since 2005, the maximum number of Armenian participants in the World Cup tournaments had been four.
In the women’s competition, Elina Danielyan, the leading player of the Armenian women’s team, represents Armenia. The World Chess Cup tournament is taking place in Sochi, Russia, this year, with 206 participants in the men’s competition and 103 in the women’s competition. It will conclude on August 6.
