Discussions on Expanding the Presence of Russian Border Guards Continue: Kopirkin

The discussions regarding the expansion of the presence of Russian border guards in the problematic sections of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border are ongoing. Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopirkin announced this during a conversation with journalists on July 7, responding to a question on whether there are any specific agreements concerning the withdrawal of military units from Armenia and Azerbaijan from the Sotk-Khoznavar section of the border, and the placement of international observers to reduce border tensions at the proposal of the Armenian Prime Minister.

“Substantial consultations are ongoing on the mentioned issues, and they are being discussed, including in practical terms. When appropriate decisions are made, we will be informed. As you know, Russian border guard posts are located in various sections of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, which help ensure that the situation at the border remains calm and stable, and it is very important that the local population feels more comfortable and secure in this unusual situation. Yes, discussions are underway on how to expand this presence. I believe everything will be determined based on the interests of ensuring Armenia's security, stability at the border, and the fulfillment of agreements reached in a trilateral format,” noted the Russian ambassador.

Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made a public proposal addressed to the international community during an extraordinary session of the Security Council held on May 27. He suggested the withdrawal of military units from Armenia and Azerbaijan from the Sotk-Khoznavar section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in a “phased manner” and placing international observers representing Russia or the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmanship there to reduce border tensions.
