VIDEO: Georgian Nationalists Tear Down EU and LGBT Flags to Prevent Tbilisi Pride Parade
Today, clashes occurred in the center of Tbilisi. Nationalists blocked Rustaveli Avenue, demolishing a tent camp that had been set up by the opposition months ago, and removed the European Union flag from the Parliament building. Several journalists covering the nationalist protests were attacked.
The nationalist forces are attempting to prevent the Tbilisi Pride parade, scheduled for today in the capital of Georgia. The event, aimed at protecting the rights of minorities, is firmly opposed by the Georgian Orthodox Church. Just hours ago, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili deemed the Tbilisi Pride event inappropriate.
Today, the groups stormed the Tbilisi Pride office and tore down the LGBT community flag from the balcony.
