Today is a Non-Working Day in Armenia

With the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Armenia in 1991, it became inevitable to adopt a new national constitution. The constitution was adopted on July 5, 1995, through a nationwide referendum, and later underwent amendments through referendums in 2005 and 2015. Following the adoption of the constitution, July 5 became a national holiday, known as Constitution Day.

The Constitution of the Republic of Armenia is the foundation of the country's legal system, serving as the fundamental law to which all other laws and legal acts must conform. It is also a values-based ideological document that defines the basic principles of societal organization, which the state should strive to implement and reinforce.

“The Armenian people, based on the fundamental principles and national goals enshrined in the Declaration of Independence of Armenia, and the sacred message of their freedom-loving ancestors in restoring a sovereign state, dedicated to the empowerment and prosperity of the homeland, to ensure the freedom of future generations, common welfare, and civic solidarity, affirming their fidelity to universal values, adopt the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia,” reads the opening lines of the Armenian Constitution.

The Constitution enshrined the nature of the Republic of Armenia as a sovereign, democratic, legal, and social state, proclaimed the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals and citizens, and established the form of governance of the republic based on the principle of separation of legislative, executive, and judicial powers.

In 2017, an amendment to the RA Law on “Holidays and Commemorative Days” confirmed the state symbols for this day. The state symbols include the flag, the coat of arms, and the national anthem, “Our Homeland.” This day is traditionally marked by a festive march. It is a non-working day.
