International Grandmaster Yuri Dokhoyan Passes Away
International Grandmaster Yuri Dokhoyan, former head coach of the Russian chess team, has passed away in Moscow, as reported by the press service of the Russian Chess Federation. Dokhoyan was 56 years old, and the cause of his death was the coronavirus.
“Grandmaster Yuri Dokhoyan was a talented chess theorist. For many years he was the coach and fighter of the 13th world champion Garry Kasparov. After Kasparov retired from professional sports, he coached leading Russian female chess players Tatyana and Nadezhda Kosintseva,” the statement from the Russian Chess Federation noted. “From 2006 to 2011, Dokhoyan led the women's Russian national team, which won the title of World Olympiad champions for the first time under his leadership in 2010.”
“From 2011 to 2015, Yuri Dokhoyan headed the men's Russian national team, which shared first place in the 2012 World Olympiad with the Armenian team, but finished second on tiebreaks.”
