We Aim to Completely Ban the Import of Turkish-Origin Products, Says Deputy Minister Varos Simonian

The ban on the import of final consumption goods from Turkey for another six months was a logical continuation of the previous measure. We aim to completely ban the import of Turkish-origin products into Armenia. This was stated by the Acting Deputy Minister of Economy Varos Simonian.

According to him, some entrepreneurs had already ceased their imports before the ban came into effect.

“At this moment, the import from Turkey amounts to 22 million drams, solely consisting of raw materials such as fabrics, leather, and some construction materials, which are actually needed by certain industries operating in our economy,” noted the acting deputy minister.

When asked why Turkish brand stores are still operating in Armenia, he explained that when they made the decision on October 20, 2020, there was a change in February allowing certain importers to fulfill their contractual obligations.

“This clause has been removed from the new decision because these entities had a reasonable timeframe to ensure that their next orders did not include Turkish products,” said Varos Simonian.

He emphasized that it does not matter from which country the Turkish product is imported; it is still not allowed.

The acting deputy minister mentioned that the main alternative markets for raw materials are the markets of EAEU countries, Iran, and China.
