Dutch Ambassador in Armenia Issues Statement on Armenian Prisoners of War

The Dutch Ambassador in Armenia, Nico Schermers, emphasizes that Armenian prisoners of war held in Azerbaijan should be returned immediately and without any conditions. As reported by Armenpress, Schermers made this statement during a press briefing with journalists.

“Prisoners of war should be returned immediately; this is the position of the Dutch government. I can only express great hope that the prisoners will return home without any conditions,” Schermers stated.

The ambassador recalled that representatives from EU countries, including Romania’s Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, and Austria’s Federal Minister for European and International Affairs Alexander Schallenberg, visited Armenia and Azerbaijan last week, where they also discussed the issue of the return of prisoners.

The Dutch ambassador also referred to the so-called “Warrior’s Park” opened in Baku, stressing that such things should not occur, deeming it unacceptable. He considers the opening of the park shocking and believes it does not contribute to peace.

“We expect the formation of a climate of trust. The parties should discuss ways to resolve issues at the diplomatic level to find pathways for coexistence in this area,” concluded the Dutch ambassador.
