EurAsia Daily Highlights Armenian Elections
The citizens of Armenia are actively voting in the extraordinary presidential elections starting from the morning of June 20, elections that would not have taken place if the outcome of the Nagorno-Karabakh war had been different. This is reported by EADaily as they analyze the potential of the forces participating in the elections.
“The extraordinary elections are meant to put an end to the prolonged chaos; however, whether they will serve as an irreversible guarantee of internal stabilization or be a prelude to new upheavals depends precisely on the election results,” notes author Vyacheslav Mikhailov.
The focus is on Robert Kocharyan, the leader of the “Armenia” alliance, which formed a new political union with the “Reviving Armenia” and “Dashnaktsutyun” parties. “Under the sign of a heroic past and a hopeful, but not guaranteed future, the entire electoral campaign of the second president has unfolded. In recent weeks, Nikol Pashinyan, the leader of the ‘Civil Contract’ party, has also spoken about the future,” the author writes, adding that Pashinyan was once almost deified, whereas now most are wary of him.
Mikhailov also states that while Kocharyan is certainly not a perfect choice for addressing all the strategic and less critical tasks facing the country, at this point in time, he has the capacity to lead Armenia towards the necessary progress.
