2287 Deceased Individuals' Data Discovered and Removed from Voter Lists, Says Ara Mkrtchyan

The head of the Police Passport and Visa Department, Ara Mkrtchyan, announced at a press conference held at the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) that a hotline had been established in the department, through which 319 calls regarding voter lists had been received throughout the process. Of these, 309 were informational in nature.

“Four calls were related to inaccuracies in the voter lists. Appropriate investigations were conducted regarding these, and the inaccuracies have been rectified,” said Mkrtchyan.

After the preliminary lists were published, statements were made by the police to the media regarding the procedures to follow in case of inaccuracies in the voter lists until the final lists were released.

“Experience has shown that the presence of deceased individuals' data is raised, discussed, and in some cases exploited during every election. I must emphasize that according to Armenian legislation, a person is removed from the state population register due to death after the death is recorded in the competent authority in the prescribed manner. There are many cases where the death information of a person does not reach the competent authority, for example, when the person has died in a foreign country,” Mkrtchyan stated.

As a result of police checks, data concerning 2287 deceased individuals were uncovered, which had not been registered by the civil registration authority. They have been removed from the voter lists.
