Ombudsman Appeals to Acting Prime Minister for Withdrawal of Azerbaijani Armed Forces from Armenian Villages

Today, I have raised the issue of submitting an urgent inter-state complaint to the European Court regarding the immediate withdrawal of the Azerbaijani armed forces from the vicinity of Armenian villages and roads between communities in a written letter addressed to the Acting Prime Minister of Armenia. This was announced by the Armenian Ombudsman Arman Tatoyan on his Facebook page.

“In the letter, I mentioned that the Ombudsman will provide the Government with gathered evidence that confirms violations of the European Convention and justifies the urgent need for a security zone. Specifically, I have stated in several previous announcements that the presence of Azerbaijani armed personnel near the villages of Gegharkunik and Syunik, as well as on roads between communities in Syunik, violates at least the following rights guaranteed to the residents of Armenia by the European Convention on Human Rights: 1) the right to life, Article 2 of the Convention; 2) the right to liberty and personal security, Article 5 of the Convention; 3) the right to respect for private and family life, Article 8 of the Convention; 4) the right to property, Article 1 of the First Protocol; 5) the right to freedom of movement, Article 2 of the Fourth Protocol, and others.

The same applies to Azerbaijani flags and signs, as well as any military equipment of their armed forces,” he wrote.
