What Will the LHK Do If Elected: Gevorg Gorgisyan
If successful in the elections, the "Enlightened Armenia" (LHK) party plans to expand the powers of the president and the parliament. Party members stated this during a conversation with journalists in the Ajapnyak community as part of their campaign, according to Armenpress.
“Enlightened Armenia” is participating in the campaign under the unique slogan “There is an alternative, vote,” aiming to unify, foster national solidarity, form a government of national unity, and work together to pull the country out of its current situation,” said Gevorg Gorgisyan.
Commenting on a provision of the program that aims to expand the powers of the presidency and parliament if the LHK is successful, Gorgisyan stated, “We currently have a super-prime ministerial system, which has led to the existence of a prime minister with unchecked mechanisms and almost absolute power. The proposal involves taking away some of the powers from the prime minister and giving them to the president and the National Assembly to create a more balanced system so that the fate of the country doesn't depend on one person.”
Addressing security issues, Gorgisyan noted that no serious problems can be solved in a divided environment. “We see the current level of the campaign where people are stepping on each other’s toes, pledging violence, and insulting one another. First and foremost, we need to eliminate this. The "Enlightened Armenia" party will do everything to ensure that there is solidarity, and together we can move forward,” he said, adding that if the LHK does not have sufficient leverage to contain escalating tensions from both sides, there is a strong possibility of clashes after June 20.
Ani Samsonyan also added that an important component of security for the LHK is the protection of the state border. According to the LHK, the protection of the state border should be carried out not by conscript soldiers but by professional contract soldiers. “The entire border needs to be equipped with modern special engineering and technical equipment so that the question does not arise whether Armenia has enough resources and soldiers to protect the newly formed border after the war,” she stated.
Early parliamentary elections in Armenia are set to take place on June 20. The pre-election campaign started on June 7 and will last until June 18.
