Makunts Reveals Details About Secret Document

According to my information, the Russian side has proposed to Armenia to create a joint trilateral commission to discuss the issues of delimitation and demarcation. This was stated today, on May 20, during a conversation with reporters by Lilit Makunts, the head of the ‘My Step’ faction in the National Assembly, addressing the question of whether they are aware of the document regarding which Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made a statement today.

“Again, according to my information, the Armenian side has responded that any issue, the possibility of creating a working group or discussing that possibility can only be the case if the Azerbaijani Armed Forces completely withdraw from the territory of Armenia,” she said.

Makunts noted that she cannot provide information regarding the details but can only say that if Armenia's proposed conditions are accepted, then it could completely serve Armenia's interests.

When asked whether it can be assumed that the content of the document pertains solely to the formation of the commission that will deal with the clarification of borders, Makunts replied that her information indicates that there is no talk of territorial concessions. “According to my information, there has been a proposal to establish a commission, to which Armenia has responded that the Azerbaijani Armed Forces must completely leave the territory of Armenia.”

When asked whether the withdrawal of Azerbaijani forces is the only condition from Armenia's side, or if there is also a condition for the return of prisoners, Makunts said she does not have information on that aspect.

When asked why the document is not published if it is beneficial for Armenia, Makunts responded, “I know about the proposal. Proposals can be made verbally or in writing. If negotiations are ongoing, then the relevant body is authorized to speak about them. I am saying what I am aware of.”

Regarding the question of whether this issue will be discussed in the National Assembly, Makunts said, “I do not want us to jump ahead of events.”

Referring to the results of the appeal to the CSTO, Makunts stated that there is still no official information. “I think the Minister of Foreign Affairs will present details at the earliest opportunity.”

When asked how she assesses the response of the Russian Federation, Makunts answered, “The question for us exists in different fields, meaning that the infiltration of Azerbaijani Armed Forces into Armenian territory cannot be acceptable to us, and we do not consider this issue in the context of border delimitation problems.”
