Aliyev Announces Start of Zangezur Corridor Opening Process
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev addressed the proposals made by the Azerbaijani side regarding cooperation and integration in the South Caucasus. He spoke at a conference titled “South Caucasus: Regional Development and Cooperation Perspectives.”
“We have made numerous proposals that stem from the November 10, 2020, statement and relate to the opening of communications and new transport corridors. I can say that work has already begun in this direction, and Azerbaijan has allocated technical and financial resources. When the Zangezur corridor opens, it will provide new opportunities for all countries in the region. Azerbaijan is open to cooperation and joint future. We are neighbors and must learn again how to live side by side,” said Aliyev.
“We have made a proposal for cooperation with Armenia on transportation issues, particularly regarding the opening of the Zangezur corridor, which will connect Azerbaijan with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic while simultaneously allowing Armenia to have a railway connection with Russia and Iran. The process has started and is underway. It is not easy, but it has begun, and we need support from both the co-chairs of the Minsk Group, including the U.S., and regional countries, including Turkey and the EU. It would be unfortunate for Armenia to lose this opportunity; this is the last chance,” added Aliyev.
