Armenian Peacekeepers Observe Azerbaijani Advancement in Syunik, Not Allowed to Open Fire, Russian Expert Says

A Russian military expert published a brief analysis on the Telegram channel of Starsha Edda regarding the events that occurred today at positions 159, 160, and 161 in Armenia. It was reported that Armenian peacekeeping troops, who have previously been deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq, are serving in that area.

“I won’t mention the numerical composition and readiness, but I will add that the entire high command of the Armenian army, especially the General Staff and rear services, should be brought before a military tribunal, including the political leadership,” the expert noted.

The Telegram channel recalled that on the morning of May 12, Azerbaijani military units advanced toward positions located in the area of the Black Lake. There are no Russian border guards present; the defense line is monitored by the Armenian Ministry of Defense's peacekeeping force.

“The commanding officers at the positions reported that they observed the accumulation of enemy personnel and that they were advancing toward the state border. They requested permission to open fire. The military leadership stated that everything is fine and prohibited any firing,” the expert stated.

It was noted that the Azerbaijanis have deepened into Armenian territory, set up camp, and erected tents.

Additionally, it was reported that the information was transmitted to Russian military personnel, who immediately moved towards the contact line. The Azerbaijani forces rejected a proposal to leave Armenian territory.

“At the same time, rumors spread in Armenia that the Russians were doing nothing, that we are defenseless, and that we need to seek real allies. I would like to say that a planned provocation took place, and both Azerbaijanis and their allies within Armenia participated in it. However, two factors hindered this beautifully orchestrated play. The Armenian peacekeepers prepared for combat by transitioning to circular defense, and the Russians responded firmly. Aviation was raised, and preparation was underway to strike at the Azerbaijani forces that had invaded the territory of Armenia from Sisian,” the expert concluded.

The Telegram channel reported that as a result, the provocation failed, the Azerbaijanis left Armenian territory, and they could not blame Russia from Yerevan.

The authors do not rule out that such actions may recur, especially if Pashinyan remains in power.
