Armenia Fully Fulfills Obligations and Returns All Azerbaijani Prisoners of War
The spokesperson for the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Anna Naghdalyan, responded to questions raised by the media:
- How do you comment on the May 5 statement from the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group regarding the prisoners of war, and the reactions from international partners? Some statements call for the release of prisoners from all sides. Are there any Azerbaijani prisoners of war or other detainees in Armenia?
- Armenia has fully fulfilled its obligations under point 8 of the trilateral statement from November 9, 2020, and has returned all Azerbaijani prisoners of war, including two individuals sentenced for the murder of a minor.
According to Naghdalyan, growing pressure from various countries and international organizations on Azerbaijan indicates that a consensus is forming in the international community regarding the prompt repatriation of Armenian prisoners of war and civilians held as hostages, in accordance with international humanitarian law.
- How do you also comment on the accusations from Azerbaijan regarding not providing information on missing persons during the first Nagorno-Karabakh war and on landmine issues?
- In light of the increasing international pressure on the issue of releasing prisoners of war, Azerbaijan is attempting to push forward false agendas while seeking justification for its own failure to meet humanitarian obligations. Armenia has always been ready to cooperate with international partners in addressing humanitarian issues.
