Uncontrollable Situation at Yerevan State University: Minister Faces a Challenge, His Program Has Not Been Implemented

The situation at Yerevan State University (YSU) is uncontrollable. The university still lacks a board of trustees, and the election of the YSU rector, postponed since March 23 for an indefinite period, remains unresolved as the YSU council is responsible for electing the rector. Thus, at present, Yerevan State University has no council, no council president, and no rector. Acting Rector Gegham Gevorgyan resigned from his temporary position on April 23.

Now, the Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports, Vahram Dumanyan, has been faced with a problem as his program has not been realized. According to information from the newspaper 'Zhoghovurd,' Minister Dumanyan had envisioned that he could have the new law on 'Higher Education and Science' signed by President Armen Sarkissian. In that case, the minister would have been able to send his people (referring to council members) to Yerevan State University, who would be manageable and capable of electing their preferred rector.

However, there are forces within YSU that are working against Vahram Dumanyan and do not wish to see him in the rector position. The individuals who had trusted the former acting rector, Gegham Gevorgyan, appear to be part of a larger game. And thus, anarchy reigns at Yerevan State University,” the newspaper writes.
