This Government is Destined to Remain Forever Stuck in the Past: Edmon Marukyan

The leader of the "Enlightened Armenia" faction in the National Assembly, Edmon Marukyan, writes on his Facebook page:

"How our future was put into question.
For centuries, the essential concern of the Armenian community has been merely about survival, that is, existence. For a people without a state, this is more than a natural behavior. But in 1991 we received the opportunity to be and do more than simple existence. With the declaration of independence and victory in war, we closed the straightforward and mundane chapter of having or not having a future.

Now, our challenge is much more complex and layered: to create an efficient and just state, a developed economy, a capable army, and so on. In fact, after 30 years of existence, the political discourse in the state should focus on the economy, free market relations, reforms, healthcare and educational systems, social justice, and various other issues.

But what happened? A political force came to power in Armenia that returned the Armenian people to the elementary and mundane problem of survival, of whether to have a future or not. They broke the spine of the state, destroyed and corrupted all state traditions, and after all this, with a serious face, they yell with arrogance and cynicism that Armenia has a future. Meanwhile, this question had long been closed and was no longer relevant.

In large part, this claim is also absurd, as the future is an inevitable course of time; it is coming, regardless. But in this case, the problem is not the future itself, but its content. What kind of future do we expect and foresee? If our path to the future is led by Nikol Pashinyan and the ruling Civil Contract Party, then surely it is a future of disaster and ruin.

In general, the current government's perceptions of the future are distorted, as they envision the journey from the present to the future through the past. That is, they must go from the present to the past in order to then propel themselves into the future. But that is an impossible adventure, as it exceeds human capability to alter the laws of time and space.

Thus, this government is destined to remain forever stuck in the past. In this sense, they have no place in the future of Armenia and the Armenian people; they are a fading past and nothing more. Our people deserve a government that looks forward and carves their own path."
