Electric Hydroplane to Be Developed, Launch Planned for 2025
The Boston-based startup Regent has announced plans to create a fully electric hydroplane for rapid travel between coastal cities, as reported by Haytech+. The company's idea is to develop a hybrid of an airplane and a ship that can efficiently maneuver in both water and air, relying on significant port infrastructure.
Regent promises flights with zero CO2 harmful emissions for distances up to 290 km at speeds of 290 km/h. The first commercial flights by Regent are scheduled for 2025.
Regent's co-founders, Billy Talheim and Michael Clingerman, are experienced engineers with pilot licenses and backgrounds in companies such as Boeing, Aurora Flight Sciences, Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic, and MIT. The entrepreneurs successfully captured the attention of investors even while operating in stealth mode and have already secured $9 million to produce a prototype.
The first tests of a scaled-down model of the electric hydroplane are expected by the end of this year. Initially, Regent will test its design in Boston before moving to New England, ensuring that the electric aircraft is prepared for adverse weather conditions.
