Supreme Court Grants Prosecutor’s Appeal: Narek Sargsyan Arrested

The Supreme Court of Armenia has approved the appeal of the Prosecutor General's Office on April 12, overturning the decision of the Court of Appeals from November 12, 2020, and solidifying the ruling of the General Jurisdiction Court to keep the arrest of defendant Narek Sargsyan in place, as reported by the adviser to the Prosecutor General, Gohar Abrahamyan.

“Considering the public interest in this case, it should be noted that Narek Sargsyan, who has been on the wanted list by the competent authorities of Armenia since June 2018, was extradited to Armenia on December 21, 2019. He has been formally charged under Article 235, Part 1; Article 268, Part 3; and Article 38-131, Part 2, Points 1, 2, 3, and 7 of the Armenian Criminal Code. An arrest has been imposed as a measure of restraint against Narek Sargsyan.

On October 9, 2020, his case was forwarded to the Yerevan City Court of First Instance for substantive examination, and by the court's decision on October 19, the selected measure of restraint was left unchanged. The defense of Narek Sargsyan appealed this decision, which was partially upheld by the Court of Appeals on November 12, 2020, changing the arrest to a bail of 25 million Armenian drams.

This decision by the Court of Appeals was also appealed by the Prosecutor General's Office to the Supreme Court, which was fully granted. In order to ensure the execution of the court act, the decision of the Supreme Court has been sent to the investigation body, and Narek Sargsyan has been arrested,” Gohar Abrahamyan wrote on his Facebook page.
