If We Are Returning to the Zangezur Corridor, Why Not Return to Yerevan, Says Aliyev
The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, has stated that one day Azerbaijanis will "return to Yerevan," where Azerbaijanis, including his ancestors, have lived, but this does not mean that they have territorial claims against Armenia. Aliyev made this statement during the conference "A New Look at the South Caucasus: Post-Conflict Developments and Cooperation" at ADA University, as reported by Minval.az.
"They have destroyed the historical part of Yerevan. It is an obvious fact that Azerbaijanis have lived there, including my ancestors... I have said that we will return there. I did not say we would return on tanks. I said we will return. It means, why not. If we are returning to the Zangezur corridor, if we are using that road, why not return to Yerevan? The time will come, we will do it. I present this position," said Aliyev.
He added that "Zangezur was transferred to Armenia in 1920, while before that it belonged to Azerbaijan."
“When I say Goycha, they now call that lake Sevan. Just look at the map from the early 20th century. You will not see Sevan there; you will see Goycha. The same applies to Yerevan,” he said.
