Canada Bans Export of Military Products to Turkey
Canada has revoked permits for the export of military products and technologies to Turkey, as Azerbaijan has used them during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. This was announced by Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marc Garneau.
“Following this analysis, which found compelling evidence that Canadian technology exported to Turkey has been used in Nagorno-Karabakh, I am announcing the cancellation of the permits that were suspended in the fall of 2020,” Garneau stated in a message posted on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website.
Canada initiated its first steps in this direction last fall. Subsequently, the Canadian government suspended export permits for military products and technologies to Turkey while an investigation was underway to determine whether Azerbaijan had indeed used Canadian technologies in the Nagorno-Karabakh military conflict. The investigation concluded that this was the case.
“This is incompatible with Canada’s foreign policy and Turkey’s end-use assurances,” noted the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
