Sport: Caparros on World Cup Qualifiers - 'We Had a Good Start, but We Need to be Realistic'
The Armenian national football team is the sole leader in Group J of the World Cup qualifying rounds. After 3 matches, Joaquín Caparros's players have achieved a 100% success rate with three wins and 9 points. North Macedonia and Germany follow in second and third place with 6 points each. Romania and Iceland have 3 points, while Liechtenstein has not earned any points.
In the upcoming 4th round starting in September, Armenia will face North Macedonia on September 2, Liechtenstein will play against Germany, and Iceland will take on Romania.
In an interview with FIFA's official website, Armenia's head coach Joaquín Caparros commented on the team's results in the World Cup qualifiers and his work in Armenia. 'I was still under contract with Sevilla when Gines Melendez contacted me and offered to work in Armenia. A successful cooperation was established with the Armenian Football Federation. There is trust in our work,' Caparros stated, according to Armenpress.
The Spanish specialist highlighted that there is a football academy in Armenia with excellent conditions, which includes 10 training fields and excellent facilities that provide every comfort. 'In Armenia, there is a desire for football to develop, and they understand that this requires good specialists. Moving up to League B in the Nations League had a significant psychological impact. We started the World Cup qualifiers with great enthusiasm, but we know we have to take it step by step,' he mentioned.
Caparros pointed out that there are teams in Group J that are always considered favorites, such as Germany. 'We rely on team effort and strength. The boys in the national team are dedicated to the team. We had a good start, but we need to be realistic,' he concluded.
